George Pino, prominent figure in Miami’s real estate industry, has entered a plea of not guilty to charges related to a fatal boating accident that occurred on Labor Day in 2022. Pino was operating his 29-foot Robalo boat when it collided with a channel marker off Boca Chita, resulting in him, his wife, and twelve teenage girls being thrown into the water. Tragically, 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez lost her life in the accident, while 18-year-old Katy Puig was left permanently disabled. Both girls were seniors at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Southwest Miami-Dade.

The State Attorney’s Office has filed three misdemeanor charges against Pino, after finding over 60 empty cans and bottles of alcohol on the boat, including an empty champagne bottle and a partially empty bottle of alcohol. Pino refused to provide a blood sample, and responding officers reported no signs of impairment.

A status hearing is scheduled in two weeks, with a trial expected to begin in mid-October. In addition to the criminal charges, the families of the victims have also filed civil lawsuits against Pino.

This tragic boating accident has had a profound effect on the families of the victims and the community at large. It serves as a reminder of the importance of boating safety and responsible alcohol consumption while operating a vessel. As the legal process continues, the families are seeking justice for their loved ones, while Pino maintains his plea of not guilty.
